Tips for Jiu-Jitsu Tournaments/Competitions

The following are some general tips for competitions and tournaments – the days leading up to tournament day, and tips for the day of.  Always feel free to ask a coach if you have any questions about competitions, especially if it’s your first one!

·       Always check the competition website for specific rules and requirements.  Most will give you a general guideline of how early to arrive (we recommend arriving at least one hour before your first scheduled match).

·       Brackets are usually posted 1=2 days before the tournament (depending on the tournament organizer).  Make sure to check the website in the days leading up to the competition.

·       Be aware of weigh-in rules.  Some organizations allow you to weigh-in without your gi, some require you to wear it.  Make sure you are registering for a weight class that you are able to make!

·       You should be able to see your start times through the tournament website – these times are dynamic, it’s important to check them frequently the day of competition.

·       Bring two gis if you have them, just in case.  Some tournaments will have guidelines on what gis are and are not allowed.

·       Once you know your estimated start time and mat number, make sure to stay close by your mat.  Tournament directors will often yell out names and brackets, so be prepared and ready to go.

·       Most venues will have an area with mats for warm-ups.  However, this is not a guarantee.  Be aware that you may not be able to warm up the same way you do at your academy.

·       Represent our academy in a positive way!  Win or lose, we ask that you model good sportsmanship.  Also, if there are others from our academy competing with you, be supportive of them.
